Conducting research and requesting photos

Research and research assistance is done by volunteers. Rather than pricing by the hour or photo, we simply ask for donations. The Society is an all-volunteer, member-supported organization and is the only organization responsible for maintaining a growing archive of Marlborough history. The Society receives no support of any kind from the city, state, or Federal government. 

Donations can be made by check payable to "The Marlborough Historical Society" and presented in-person or mailed to The Marlborough Historical Society, 377 Elm Street, Marlborough, MA 01752. Donations are usually in the range of $20 - $25/hour. All donations are used to purchase preservation supplies and improve the physical care of the materials. If a monetary donation is not possible, we encourage you to volunteer to help respond to other research requests.

Resources for Marlborough genealogy research

• The Society's archives contain records from many early Marlborough families, as well as information from churches, schools, and other organizations, and can be used for research by appointment. 
• Information on securing a copy of your birth certificate is on the city's site.
• Examine these Histories of Marlborough, which include mentions of many early families.
• See the section on cemeteries below.
  
• The New England Historic Genealogical Society is the nation's oldest genealogical organization. Founded in 1845, it has a wealth of resources, including free online courses and database lookup.
• The Middlesex Chapter of the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists.
• Middlesex County information within the US Gen Web project.
  
• There are many other excellent resources that cover genealogy--Marlborough and beyond. The one noted below has been recommended by our members.

Marlborough cemeteries

• The 1908 book Marlborough, Massachusetts, Burial Ground Inscriptions: Old Common, Spring Hill, and Brigham Cemeteries can be read and searched online or downloaded from Google Books as a PDF is here. 
• This report was prepared for the City of Marlborough in August 2002 detailing important repairs for Marlborough's historic cemeteries. This preservation resource may also be of interest: Preservation Guidelines for Municipally-Owned Historic Burial Grounds and Cemeteries (Third edition).
• A detailed inventory of Weeks Cemetery, including a picture and transcription of every marker, was conducted in the fall of 2008 by Peter B. Snyder and is included in the FindAGrave records for Weeks Cemetery (below).
