Eugene Ovide Lambert

    Eugene was born the 4th of April 1919 in Marlborough, Massachusetts the oldest of seven children born to Eugene and Annie Lambert. He was raised on Monument Avenue and a graduate of Worcester Boys Trade School Class of 1938. He originally enlisted into the Army National Guard the 19th of December 1938. He served with Company K of the 181st Infantry Regiment until being mobilized the 16th of January 1941. Eugene volunteered for service in the newly formed paratroopers and was sent to Camp McCall, South Carolina and to Fort Benning Georgia where earned his wings and qualified as a paratrooper. Eugene and his fellow airborne soldiers trained for much of 1942 and 1943 in North Carolina and Tennessee. While still in training Eugene married Christine Lapriore the 15th of November 1943.

    Eugene was sent to England in January of 1944 to meet the 101st Airborne Division which was billeted in Berkshire County England. On the 5th of June 1944 Eugene and the others from the 101st Airborne Division boarded transport aircraft and early on the morning of the 6th of June were flown to France as the tip of the spear in the invasion of mainland Europe. Known as D-Day, the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment was tasked with securing the approaches to Utah beach to allow for the landing of infantry units from offshore. Eugene was killed in action near the small French town of Baudienville after parachuting into Normandy. He was originally buried at the Sainte-Mere-Eglise Cemetery #2 before being removed to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, France. Lambert Circle in Marlborough is named in his honor.
